The Five Components of True Wellness
The total state of wholeness a human being can aim for is known as wellness. Nutrition as well as exercise vital components of wellness, but there is more to be accomplished on the road to holistic wellness.
Physical wellness has multiple smaller components, from blood pressure, to skeletal structure to stamina and more. Yearly physical exams at a doctor’s office work to track and control such wellness factors. On top of that, ?a patient may be advised to see a specialist too, such as a cardiologist or a nephrologist, should the situation warrant a referral.
In emotional wellness, a person is able to regulate and compartmentalize his emotions. Emotional self-regulation refers to how a person acknowledges and controls his feelings towards specific situations and life as a whole experience. It helps one determine the triggers that cause emotional issues. Similarly, compartmentalization is a psychological mechanism in which a person is able to maintain a healthy sense of detachment from negative emotions, as when they go through a traumatic experience or its effects.
Socialization is inherent in the human circuitry. In short, people will reach out to one another as a need. We all want to feel that we belong. Every time we engage in positive social interactions, we get a reward: belongingness or the feeling of it. This is basic positive reinforcement whose principle also rings true for toxic relationships being damaging to health, and happier relationships creating the opposite impact. Therefore, it is logical to assume that strong, healthy social ties is critical to achieving total wellness.
Spiritual wellness can have a different meaning from one person to another, depending on their religious background. Nevertheless, this spirituality must receive time, attention and nourishment. It provides the person with a sense of being grounded.
Lastly, the mind of a person is as diverse as his physical body. For many out there, satisfying a need for intellectual stimulation and socialization is of equal importance as receiving proper nutrition. Without it, they feel incomplete. Learning can be a crucial aspect of life. When we read books, write essays, ask probing questions and all that, we are learning new things about the world, especially viewpoints that may run counter to our own long-held beliefs. Cognitive engagement is probably the most stimulating activity we can do in this world.
At the end of the day, we should all work towards attaining a sense of total wellness, and this is not something we can achieve unless we put our whole heart and mind into it. Many will distract us, but we must maintain discipline to never lose focus.
